National Sawdust+ kicks off its 2018—19 season with The Gate, an event featuring gatekeepers who spy and cultivate talent across different fields. The pioneering literary figures Chris Jackson (publisher and editor in chief of One World, who has edited books by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Eddie Huang, and Trevor Noah, among others) and Emily Nemens will join Paola Prestini, composer, co-founder and artistic director of National Sawdust (one of Musical America’s “Top 30 Musical Innovators”), to talk about bringing important new voices to the fore in an evolving landscape, as debates about diversity, inclusion, and equity rage on.

How do they search for, then select, the artists they showcase, and how do existing structures help or hinder that process? This event, moderated by the NS+ curator Elena Park, will feature a performance of Emma O’Halloran’s Hildegard Award—winning piece, Constellations, and writer Crystal Hana Kim reading from her just-published debut novel, If You Leave Me (Harper Collins).
