Digging on Hardscrabble

In a deep well I swung a pickax
into packed caliche, so dark I aimed the ax
by feel. My brother leaned back safe
away from me. Sweat was a blessing
the body gave. My brother called out
and drank, metal canteens the only
water we might find. I sank down
to my knees, baptized myself
