In the two photographs I have of her,
taken over ten years apart, she wears
the same plain dress. In the first,
she sits in the sun (under a parasol)
next to her daughter. Marguerite, my
mother’s mother, whose smile is warm,
while Great-grandmother’s is stiff
beneath spectacles.
