Two Poems by Tim Kendall
Green Woodpecker

This is the house of the wooden roof
where nobody sleeps past dawn.

The house of the wooden roof
hunkers in the forest's heart.
Green woodpecker is not without options.

Each year the builder comes to fix
the house of the wooden roof.
Green woodpecker watches
then flies away, yaffling.

In the house of the wooden roof
she grieves for a husband gone.
He sleeps elsewhere
under hard immaculate slate.
